FREE INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP WITH PAUL JJ ALIX

Join us for this exceptional opportunity.

In this workshop you will become familiar with Paul's life work in the field of Yoga, Sanskrit, Vedic Chanting, Pranayama, Meditation and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

After an interactive discussion on these topics Paul will offer an experience of these modalities depending on the questions and needs of the attendees.

As yoga teachers and practitioners you will find this method of teaching and practicing quite different from the other modalities available for study, yet strictly following the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya.

This is not a course in which one just 'copies' the instructor but rather an in depth study of how to make Classical Yoga work for the individual.

Although admission is free,

appointments are required to reserve space.

PERSONIFIED PRACTICE

Saturday November 10th 2007

1-6pm Cost: $50

How to personalize your own practice. It's easy to get caught up in externalization of our practice; whenever we are unhappy with our practice, feeling like we're not good enough or just basic comparing ourselves to another, we are externalized. However, the posture should arise naturally within the individual guided by the deep intuition offering a clear reflection of our state and condition. Without the later, there is no yoga. You will be introduced to the most difficult aspect of practicing and teaching: the detailed science of combining postures, an art which determines the entire effect of the practice. This includes how to prepare for the poses to come and how to compensate for the poses finished. The quality of a practice depends on the precise relationship between postures. Any change in this relationship changes the effect. Many teachers today do not have a solid understanding of this science and therefore follow a set class of the same posture sequence for everybody, or they offer something that they tried out on their own body or put asanas together in an almost random fashion due to poorly understood principles. No matter who you are or what level you are at, if you have a home practice or would like to start, this course is designed to enhance your experience to the core of your being. No prior skill is required but a desire to understand personalized practice.

BREATHING BODY

Sunday November 11th 1-6pm 2007

Cost: $50

Breath is not something random we could ignore and wait to use when we have a certain level of expertise in asana. It is the very instigator of the movement in and out of the postures. There are exceptional practitioners and even skilled and famous teachers who have not mastered this simple rudimentary aspect of their practice, breathing.

You will be introduced to methods of muscular attention used in breath not taught or covered in any way in other schools of yoga, yet considered to be fundamental and classical to yoga asana itself.

Asana instigated & motivated by breath with the entire movement conscious of the breath allows intimate attention to details never before noticed, while the mind itself becomes infused with the inner light. This is the way out of old established, unconscious and mechanical movement patterns that leave the body functioning below optimal levels.

Learn how the breath and spinal column work together in an asana practice, unknown to most yoga teachers and practitioners. It's actually the flow of inhale and exhale that cause the muscles to stretch and extend properly. Without this knowledge it is mere stretching and body sculpting. If the former two mentioned practitioners knew and understood this technique, they would switch to yoga in a heartbeat.

Breath knowledge is the tool to heal old injury and care for one that is present while avoiding those coming in the future.

Asana practiced from this basis is the key to respiratory, physiological and metabolic health and leaves the doorway wide open for the practice of pranayama.

Paul has been practicing Yoga without break for well over 30 years. He is a student of TKV Desikachar. He holds verbal certification from Gary Kraftsow of Viniyoga America and is certified in Vedic Mantra by the KSRI of the Madras Sanskrit College. He is the Creator of YOGA for ALL®, Any Body, Any Condition, Any Age.® and is an RYT Grandfather offering his expertise in various Yoga Teacher Trainings Nationally.

Vedic Chanting & Asana

Friday October 19th 2007

6pm - 9pm Cost: $40

We are offering this unique opportunity to study the source of the Yoga Teachings; The Vedas. Even the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali refer back to the ancient Vedas for authenticity.

This course is open to all students and teachers at any level. Our practice will be deeply profound for the experienced teacher as well as accessible to the novice. This class follows a unique format and will encourage student's evolving perceptions regarding their personal practices.

In this class we will be learning authentic chanting of mantras from the Yajur and/or Rig Vedic Texts while accompanying them with simple yet deep and profound Yoga Asana Vinyasa Practices.

Each session will begin with warm-up practices for the voice & the body: simple trainings of the voice in preparation for correct mantra chanting.

We will progress into an authentic mantra from the ancient Vedas and continue to chant this mantra while moving in/out and back into postures done in series. We will also practice the mantras for use with Pranayama and Meditation.

Acharya Krishnamacharya.
SRI T. K R I S H N A M A C H A R Y A

Excerpt from 'Sri Krishnamacharya the Purnacarya'

Q: Does Hatha Yoga mean 'a forceful yoga'?

No.

Q: Some people describe that the kundalini goes through the sushumna to the sahasrara. Is it correct?

No. It is the prana vayu that moves through the sushumna.

Q: What happens to the kundalini when the highest of Hathayoga is mastered?

It is not explained in our shastras. It's position itself is disputed i.e. where and what happens to the kundalini is not clearly mentioned in the shastras.

Q: Is dhyana, dharana, samadhi a sadhana or a siddhi?

Since it has been mentioned as a samyama it is attainable. So it has to be a sadhana.

Q: Should yama and niyama, precede the practice of asana and pranayama?

Yama, niyama, asana and pranayama go together. Without the varnasrama dharma, yama and niyama are not possible.

Q: Yoga means to join. It is like many grains together?

It's like sugar and water or salt and water.

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya...
(PHOTO AT TOP)

was the teacher & father of TKV Desikachar who gave the name 'Viniyoga' to his fathers teachings. He was also the teacher of famous BKS Iyengar and Patabi Jois. The Ashtunga method originated from Mr Jois's training with Krishnamacharya. Basically he has made his influence on Yoga as it is taught today.

His main contribution to the practice of Yoga was that it should be adapted to the individual, and not the individual to Yoga.

He was born in 1888. He traveled throughout India studying from the best teachers he could find. He had mastered Ayurveda (ancient life & healing system of India) and Sanskrit. When he was 28, he had learned of a great Yogi who lived in the Himalayas, on lake Manosarovar at the foot of Mt. Kailash. Penniless he went there to learn Yoga from Ram Mohana Brahmacari who was his teacher for 7+ years. Then his guru asked him to leave and to teach Yoga in the cities of India. This was the demanded payment from his teacher.

Krishnamacharya lived for a hundred one years. He is not with us today but his spirit permeates our teachings.
