Chanting & Discussion

Thursday, January 20, 2005; 1:45-5:15 pm
Friday, March 11, 2005; 6:00-10:00 pm
Held at Downtown Studio

An overview of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras, written by the great sage Patanjali, is the single most important text for students studying to become Yoga Teachers. The very vibration of these Sutras, as chanted by Paul, enables seasoned students to achieve a visceral experience of these pertinent teachings and insight into how they apply to daily life. We will be chanting and understanding with proper Sanskrit inflection this ancient text as it pertains to our present day life as teachers and students of yoga. Open only to trainees unless otherwise permitted.

SANSKRIT ALPHABET Vedic Chanting
YOGA THERAPY

November 13 & 14, 2004

Saturday 1:00 - 5:00 pm
Sanskrit Alphabet, Vedic Chanting & Meditation
Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 pm Yoga Therapy and adapting pose to meet the needs of the body

Saturday:
Emphasis will be on learning and chanting the alphabet with an introduction to Sanskrit and Vedic chanting. We will explore the tie into modern day language and the vibratory effects of Sanskrit on human consciousness and healing.

Being present to pronunciation, accent of tone (pitch), duration of sound, force of articulation, rhythm, continuity of sounds, posture, focus, and group energetics we will link with our divinity.

Sunday:
How to work with those with special needs due to body structure, age or illness with lots of practical examples.

Physical and mental differences require unique approaches to our practice and studies, as do the wishes that motivate us. As teachers and practitioners, we can benefit from insight and creative process encouraged from developing practices that address individual needs. The perspective that the YOGA for ALL school gives us opens up endless possible adaptations.

We will look at what we practice and what we teach. Rather than replace it, we will build and adapt it to better assist our needs. This is an interactive workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring a difficulty from their practice or teaching to share with the group.

Aasana Sequencing

How to construct a practice so that aasanas prepare for each other building up to our peak aasana, and using aasana to soften the effects of these more challenging postures. We must be careful to not get caught trying to know too much from the outside of our postures. Often times we may find ourselves trying to progress, struggling to do more and better postures.

Let us not be fooled to judge progress from the outside. It's the proper experience that we are looking for in our practice. This is not a linear progression but rather a removal of what has been blinding us all the while. Learning to practice to release the Self from bondage rather than to accomplish some physical goal is the focus of our workshops.

Teacher Training in YOGA for ALL

YOGA for ALL ® Teachers Training..

.. is offered so that students who understand their practice may help others learn. Students that have practiced for many years and those that have taught for many years in this or other traditions, may apply for our program. This personalized instruction will deepen your ability to work with students and understand their differing needs.

At YOGA for ALL
® teacher training's considered an ongoing life process. We are not so concerned with how one gets a piece of paper and into the marketplace as how one conducts oneself for the improvement of their own practice as a means of teaching others.

How to create a practice that reverberates so intensely in your being that it pours over into the people who learn from you. At the same time respecting where your student is rather than trying to bring them to where you are or think that they should be.

Teaching is a part and parcel of your practice. It does not replace your personal practice, but enhances, taking it to a higher level. In other words, you must practice on your own and teach - in combination. One alone without the accompaniment of the other will not offer the higher realization of your purpose.

Probably it takes about 10 years of practice to make a worthwhile teacher. Logical reasoning may cause us to suspect a teacher that claims to have been teaching since they began study. However, the attempt to teach what you have learned will make you a better student. Therefore teach whenever anyone asks you for help or insights even when you have seemingly something small to offer, but be cautious in referring to yourself as a teacher or attempting to teach what you vaguely understand. Preferably remain a student for the rest of your life, allowing people to learn from your studious attentiveness.

Look for teachers that claim to be students. Honor their humility. Look out for the self proclaimed masters and stay far away.

Rudi in His Own Words

My first yoga teacher weighed probably ninety pounds and was ninety years old, but the force coming out of him was so strong for me I actually had to put my hand against the doorjamb and push myself through the door when I walked into the room with him. The energy coming out of him really burned in me. It caused such a tremendous response that after a day or two I had to crawl on my hands and knees, kicking myself along the woodwork, to get myself in. It brought about a tremendous reaction in me, a response that had to do with work, and of course, the response set up a tremendous resistance.

It is only a very stupid person, someone who does not wish to grow, who has critical attitudes. It is only someone who has nourishment inside who can open and surrender his or her attitudes and limitations, draw from another person, and learn. I have studied in many parts of the world. And, I have sat with people who I felt were very different from me, and it certainly bothered me. It always bothers us to feel and sense differences. But you learn that you can tune in to somebody, you can develop inside you a sympathetic vibration. You can understand them by having the security inside to open and feel and try to set up a field of energy between yourself and another human being and begin to draw from that person what he or she has to offer. This is, finally, the only way we can grow and the only way we have the capacity to change. Even if we have learned many things, even if we have, spiritually, certain developments, it does not represent the entire capacity that we might have or the entire capacity that exists in the world.
It is no different than taking a course in a university. What a professor teaches may exist in a book, but to extract from that person the knowledge that you want and then, above that, the grade that you desire, requires reaching into the person, understanding his or her psychology, and drawing from him or her - regardless of your own attitude and the resistance you might feel towards that kind of personality. That is spirituality.

Understanding Counterpose

Who needs them and when. How to choose counterposes for your students. Specific counterposes for specific poses, is it always the same for everyone? What happens if we don't teach counterpose or even if we use the wrong counterpose for students needs?

Do all Yoga schools make use of counterpose? Are the counterposes you use correct for your students?

Let's refine this art in our teaching and learn how to take care of our students even if they strained to accomplish a difficult pose. An asana practice could be properly planned to counterpose stresses and challenges your students acquire from job or sport activity or daily life.

In a teachers workshop we will cover how to generalize and particularize for yourself and students this little understood art of counterpose.

Excerpt from 'Sri Krishnamacharya the Purnacarya'

Q: Does Hatha Yoga mean 'a forceful yoga'?

No.

Q: Some people describe that the kundalini goes through the sushumna to the sahasrara. Is it correct?

No. It is the prana vayu that moves through the sushumna.

Q: What happens to the kundalini when the highest of Hathayoga is mastered?

It is not explained in our shastras. It's position itself is disputed i.e. where and what happens to the kundalini is not clearly mentioned in the shastras.

Q: Is dhyana, dharana, samadhi a sadhana or a siddhi?

Since it has been mentioned as a samyama it is attainable. So it has to be a sadhana.

Q: Should yama and niyama, precede the practice of asana and pranayama?

Yama, niyama, asana and pranayama go together. Without the varnasrama dharma, yama and niyama are not possible.

Q: Yoga means to join. It is like many grains together?

It's like sugar and water or salt and water.

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya...
(PHOTO AT TOP)

was the teacher & father of TKV Desikachar who gave the name 'Viniyoga' to his fathers teachings. He was also the teacher of famous BKS Iyengar and Patabi Jois. The Ashtunga method originated from Mr Jois's training with Krishnamacharya. Basically he has made his influence on Yoga as it is taught today.

His main contribution to the practice of Yoga was that it should be adapted to the individual, and not the individual to Yoga.

He was born in 1888. He traveled throughout India studying from the best teachers he could find. He had mastered Ayurveda (ancient life & healing system of India) and Sanskrit. When he was 28, he had learned of a great Yogi who lived in the Himalayas, on lake Manosarovar at the foot of Mt. Kailash. Penniless he went there to learn Yoga from Ram Mohana Brahmacari who was his teacher for 7+ years. Then his guru asked him to leave and to teach Yoga in the cities of India. This was the demanded payment from his teacher.

Krishnamacharya lived for a hundred one years. He is not with us today but his spirit permeates our teachings.
